Atlanta winters

I have always been a do-it-yourself type of guy... yes I am a penny pincher. This winter my wife who is also frugal asked me to buy digital thermostats to replace our old dials. I went to HomeDepot and bought the mid range gear and a book on electrical wiring 1-0-1. I hooked everything up and presto.

Later on I noticed that the system was constantly trying to ballance to the exact temperature I set. The last three months I have paid $550 for gas rather than my usual $350 from a year ago. My gas price has actually gone down and even though it has been a colder winter I was still shocked. As it has been a really cold winter I paid and waited for the next bill and paid that as well. In January it has been a bit warmer and the big bill just keeps on comming. I called the gas company and they sent a guy from Atlanta Gas and Light. On a side note... the best service I have seen in a long time. That guy should get a raise and the company should get a J.D. Powers award. Anyway after using a sniffer on all pipes and appliances to check for leaks we notice my cooler fan is running even though the heating is on.

Rule 1: Never do your own electrical wiring!

I estimate that it has cost me around $450 extra as my heating and cooling have been ballancing 24/7 for the past three months.

The moral of this story is that many are looking for ways to save as the winters are getting colder in Atlanta. If you do save smart!
