Day Trip to Augusta

My wife likes to make day trips during weekends. Some fresh air and doing something together with the family. This Sunday we drove 140 miles to Augusta.

Augusta is naturally know for the Augusta National Golf Course. I had always though that the place was closer to Atlanta, but no. Augusta itself impresses with its river walk and small town main street. For some reason Augusta also seems to be a major hub of hospitals and medical colleges.

The day was sunny and warm and we toke a stroll down the river walk. The river water was amazingly clear. On the South Carolina side the river front was build solid with huge mansions. Why would anyone build a huge expensive mansion in a small town like Augusta Georgia? Golfers? Docters? Professors? My wife suggested that locals build big houses to accomodate the rich and famous that come every your for the Masters. A week in one of those house during the Masters probably finances the rest of the year.

We ate lunch at the White Elephant Cafe, small town cafe on the main street. The food and presentation were great. The place was packed and to my pleasure they played Spanish guitar music over the speaker system. Small place like that and then you get European folk guitar... amazing. I highly recommend the sweet potato chips as an apetizer!

We toke the kids to the local Childrens "Science" Museum. Again I was amazed at the facilities they had... much better than the childrens museum of Atlanta. After two hours of play time we had the pull the kids away kicking and screaming.

The canal museum was closing and the last canal tour boat of the day had already left. Some thing for the next time. All in all a great day! A jewel in rural Georgia.
